Granted, it makes for a pretty regimented experience. But when you’re playing well and the crowd is going bonkers, holding up signs and helping band mates crowd surf, it feels fantastic. Their angry and confused faces and the dip in auditorium energy almost makes it harder to get back in the groove. One gig you’ll be in a metal group in a pitch black auditorium with dudes in long beards handing you axes between songs, the next you might be in an all-girl band on an outdoor stage with a makeup assistant brushing your face just before the set starts.Īnd the way in which fans dynamically turn on you mid-song when you mess up is both striking and intimidating. At minimum Freestyle Games hired hundreds of people to act as fans at these shows.Īnd we’re not just talking one venue, band, or set of roadies, either. I’m pretty sure the live crowd turns CGI if you look far enough back (outdoor scene backgrounds are obviously green screened), but I can’t tell exactly where or when the transition happens.
